General Organization

This quilt is not highly organized and provides a challenge to provide an accurate description. It appears that the center part of the quilt was built around an organized plan. – Strips of nine-patches separated by rectangles. The strips are separated by sashing.

The organization begins to break down in the outermost pieced strips and across all the strips near the top. For purposes of this description, I will treat these three outside edges as a border.

  • Strips
    • This quilt top consists of 9 strips which are separated by sashing. Eight of the strips generally consist of alternating nine patch units and rectangles. One of these strips consists of concatenated nine-patch units without the rectangles.
    • Width: –“
    • Nine-Patch Block Description
    • Rectangle Description
    • Sashing:
      • Width
      • The sashing is irregularly pieced in both fabric length, width and orientation.
  • Borders
    • One border is present on 3 sides of the top. These borders are the outside strips to the left and right as shown above as well an upper region across the top of the quilt as shown.
      • The left-most pieced strip does not have rectangles between the nine-patch units.
      • The right-most pieced strip uses significantly different sizes for the nine patch units and the rectangles.
      • The top border is a wedge shape that is narrower on the left side. The bottom edge of the border meets the top of the left most strip of sashing and runs to where the sashing fabric changes from cream to red in the right most strip.
      • Describe these dimensions.
  • Techniques: Patchwork
  • Stitching Method: Hand
  • Workmanship of Piecing: Very Good
  • Workmanship of Setting: Good
